Yeah, it's rather hard to take.
My dad was one of the youngest in WWII, being age 17 when he joined the Navy in 1944. He died 3-1/2 years ago at age 86. He would be turning 90 next month, if he was still alive. He went to Okinawa and saw lots of stuff that no one should have to see, as did many who served. Occasionally, he would talk about it, but when we tried to interview him, so we could record his stories, he didn't want to. I tried to remember the things he said and write them down, but I don't have a whole lot.
We need to cherish these people as long as we can.
