I had to loosen the mounting bolts and use a jack to lift the opposite side of the transmission to get clearance to remove and replace the pto. But bolts would definitely make the job easier.
You can measure the depth of the threaded area in the transmission and the thickness of the pto base to determine the length of the bolt/stud you need.
