I do envy you east-coast people who can get white oak for cheap. We have all kinds of great softwood lumber in North Idaho, but oak of any sort is a king's ransom. Years ago I was visiting a friend in Delaware and their neighbors were building a fence out of white oak. I expressed surprise that they were using such good wood and asked them why they didn't use cedar. They said cedar costs way too much, and they can get the oak from right down the road.
