Jim: The trick for getting these out is get a tool that fits the slot perfectly and use an impact tool. John in PA is spot on.
This is one place where the Chinese junk from Harbor freight comes in perfectly. They sell a large bit 3/8" drive (maybe it's 1/2" drive) slotted and phillips head driver set. It's under ten bucks. The one of the slotted bits needs a small amount of grinding and it fits in the slot perfectly. The key here again is the tool has to fit well, and not be half the size of the slot. I then use my 3/8" dewalt impact screwdriver and out they come.
Now if the screws are buggered up it might be time to get out the drill... I've never used heat or wax.

Lastly, put some anti-seize on them before you put them back, and don't put them back in if they are buggered up....

And furthermore.... when you turn the drums, have the hubs attached. But make 100% sure the mating surfaces of the hub and drum are rust free. Wire brush the heck out of them. 0.002" of rust equates to a lot of run out at the end of these big drums.
