I bypassed the ballast resistor and runs like a champ -- smooth idle, no sputtering under load. I've concluded the issue is weak spark, probably only "weak" because it has to deal with carboned-up plugs.

In the interest in getting the trolley back on the road ASAP, this being High Season for the mine tour, my plan is to get a fuel pressure regulator and drop the pressure to 3.5 lbs which is supposedly what Webers want, and also put on a Pertronix ignition. I'll also replace the vacuum advance which is no-op as long as I have the distributor out.

I realize the factory ignition "ought" to work fine, but I don't want to spend my summer futzing with it. The wiring is a brittle old mess and I already had to add a relay a couple of years ago just to bypass the ballast resistor when starting because some doofus put in an ignition switch that didn't have a terminal for ballast-resistor bypassing in the "start" position. The Pertronix will let me do a simple clean install with no ballast resistor or switching thereof. There will be no old wires in the ignition circuit that way.

Opinions? Which Pertronix unit should I get?
