This is called "phasing the drive shafts". As long as the yokes are installed correctly on the front and rear driveshafts, neither will ever become out of phase. However, since there is no permanent connection between the input and output yokes internal to the transfer case, the theoretical "driveshaft" that passes through the transfer case can, and will, get out of phase when you are driving in low range and if you provide rotation to the input to the transfer case while the case is in its "fake neutral" position.

I phase the input and output yokes on my transfer case after each time I use low range. I can tell right away when I drive at speed on a highway if I have not phased the case. The out of phase condition creates unique harmonics.
