When the lever is in the mid-way position, it is also possible to align the input and out going yokes to reduce vibration when traveling at road speed in 2WD.
This alignment can get disturbed when you run the transfer case in 4WD/low gear.
One of the helpful tips I learned when I was visiting with Dave Horvath couple weeks ago.
