To answer your last question: If yours has the helical gears, it is the sychromesh transmission, but it is only synchronized in 3rd and 4th gears. I never understood why Dodge would synchronize 4th but not 2nd. 4th is very easy to upshift into without being synchronized, and it seems to me that it would be far more useful to synchronize 2nd gear, as it would be much easier to downshift from 3rd, and it would also be easier to upshift from 1st to 2nd. Upshifting from first is not usually a problem for many of us, because many of us start off in 2nd gear, but if you're pulling a heavy load, or doing offroad work, this would be useful. Maybe it was much easier to synchronize 4th, due to the arrangement of the gearing, or the space available in the gearbox. I haven't really given it a whole lot of thought, but have thought it would be nice, not that it matters to me, since I have the "up-to" type of non-synchro tranny in my '49.
