I have seen on real old cast iron woodworking machinery where it appears to me some broken piece was replaced with a brass piece made by sticking the broken parts together temporarily, maybe with glue, and making a mold into which they poured brass. Clues are: signs of a crack line, details missing, and bubbles and inclusions in the brass showing it wasn't a production-quality casting. Perhaps this is something small machine shops could do 100 years ago. I'm thinking it must pre-date oxyacetylene brazing of cast iron, though, because that would be an easier and better repair.
