That's definitely a thought, too, although I nitrided a 230 crank many years ago, and it came back warped, just enough to make it unusable. That crank was 0.040 under at all journals, which was the most I was comfortable with, so when it came back warped, that was the last nail in the coffin, and I ended up scrapping that crankshaft.

For long life of the crankshaft or any other part of the engine, flathead expert George Asche recommends using synthetic oil. He says that's all he uses in his flatheads these days. His souped up 251 (or 265?), even with his lead foot, lasted him about 200,000 miles using synthetic oil, before needing a rebuild. Charles Talbert at M-Series rebuild also recommends using synthetic oil in our flatheads. Both of them say they get no leaks, which is usually the concern with these older engines.
