The seal is one of the types with the two halves, one in the block, and one in the cap.

Are there bearings that are oversize in the thrust direction? I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean much. It would have to be quite a bit oversize, I think, for this engine. I haven't measured the amount of play, but just eyeballing it, it looks like it's 0.020 or 0.030" clearance. It's pretty bad-looking. The very outer edge of the thrust flange has material remaining that the rest of it does not, and that remaining material makes for a very noticeable step that can easily catch your fingernail, kind of like a big ring ridge in a cylinder. And the whole thrust surface is very scored.

Anyway, we'll what the machine shop says, and I'll ask them about bearings with oversize thrust surfaces. But I still wouldn't mind some tips on what to ask for, or watch for, on the welding aspect of it.
