I agree with you regarding the damper's purpose being for torsional vibration damping.

If I know the damper is correct for that engine, and has good rubber, then I agree it would be preferred to run it. It's likely to help the engine to run smoother, which will be a benefit to the life of the engine, and possibly a smoother feel in the cab.

If the damper is not correct for the engine, then it may not do any good, and I could see how it might make the vibes worse. The wrong mass or damping characteristics of the damper unit could cause the vibes to build up instead of dampening out.
