If you're budget minded find a good local body guy to do a repaint. Either buy a new bed or go looking for a good used one.

There is bound to be a good mechanic within a couple hours of you that can put new seals and such in the various boxes to slow the leaks. Doing a basic mechanical cleanup and giving the truck s new coat of paint will be way cheaper than a true nut and bolt restoration where everything is redone.

The only problem with the approach you're suggesting is seeing the ugly areas next to the nice shiny bits. You'll just have to close your eyes to the ugly and enjoy the pretty parts.

Start by asking around at local car clubs and car shows for recommendations of a good painter. Find someone with a good reputation and then go look at a few examples of their work. Your budget might require more of the work be done by you or a little less perfection in the finished product. A good body guy can explain what different levels of quality look like and cost.

Good luck,
Eric
