Makes a world of difference when you want to stop. I wouldn't haul much without them on a trailer. It isn't the way you drive you need to think about, it is the one in the other car talking or texting away not paying attention.
There are better deals out there. I picked up my 10k trailer with brakes on both axles used for $1500. Just have to keep looking and maybe spend a little more now for a trailer that will support future trips and projects.
