12 valve CTD lift pump questions

Finally getting back to the crewcab project. Engine is '89 12 valve CTD. Just looking for stock performance from the engine. Looked at some previous posts and Paul's pics - sounds like the stock mechanical fuel (lift) pump is fine as long as I install a sending unit/gauge between the lift pump and the injector pump to keep an eye on the fuel pressure (?). Or would a frame-mount electric fuel pump/filter aftermarket setup be more dependable, long term (?). If so - any recommendations? Thanks!
