A few years back, I had some work to do on a '62 Volvo I had at the time. I don't remember what exaclty I was doing, but I had the ignition on for some good reason. Probably so I could listen to the radio or something.

Anyhow, an hour after I quit...I was sitting watching the tube inside and I heard a *BANG*. I went out to investigate but had no clues. Next morning the car wouldn't start.

Opened the hood and found the top of the coil sitting on top of the radiator, a bunch of burned up coils of magnet wire everywhere, and thick tar like black goo everywhere.

If your ignition is on, and the engine isn't running, and your points happen to be closed...the coil will be on and stay on...and eventually get hot. In my case, it blew up. Yours might have simply got hot and shorted out and failed. That's what I would start with.

Or it might be something completely different.....

Good luck!
