78 powerwagon head question

I am in the process of installing an edelbrock performer intake on my 360
and noticed that above the center opening (I
believe is the opening for the choke stove and the EGR Valve) there is a crecent shaped opening going into the head on both sides. I took off a 2 barrel intake. I think this was the stock intake. These crecent shaped openings were just covered up with the old gasket. My question is what are these for and I suppose I should seal these back up. The new gasket provided an opening for the holes but the old one did not. Just curious.
