the front and rear bearings on these trucks are not lubricated by the differential gear oil like many other full floating axle designs. they must be packed well with HD wheel bearing grease.
The outer seal prevents the gear oil from entering the bearing area. They did this for offroad purposes. when the truck is tilted to the extreme left or right the gear oil would all drain into the hub starving the diff if it didn't have the outer seals.
