I have posted about this before and am still having issues. I have an M37B1 NP420 transmission with a PTO. I have rebuilt both the transmission and the PTO, the PTO twice. The PTO had a chipped tooth on the main gear which I replaced with a NOS gear. Everything else was perfect. I installed new bearings/races/seals in both units.

When mated there is a tapping/knocking sound in all gears. The PTO shifts fine and runs in both directions but with the tapping/knocking sound. I have the correct lash on the gears when installed and have tried many different thicknesses of gaskets without any affect on the sound.

When separated, the transmission runs fine without the tapping/knocking sound. I can't replicate the sound by manually spinning the gears on the PTO, they spin smooth without sound.

When mated, I can drive the vehicle, shifts fine through all the gears but has the tapping/knocking sound. It is not a continuous sound but a knocking once every revolution? Speeds up and slows down with throttle.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks!
Clark
