I've always felt the winch should be in the back. Usually when you get stuck, you do not want to keep going forward, you want to back up.
In the 70's they sold a kit that had rollers mounted on the front, and under the frame to act as a guide for cable run under the truck. But when stuck, you'd have to go mud diving to run it under the truck.
