That's exactly what I did when I switched out my third members from 4.89's to 4.30's. I used postwar 4 pinion 8&3/4" units found on 1 ton PH series trucks. The axle shafts are much thicker also. For the rear axle, I simply cut the PH series axle shaft splines down a bit so as to be the same length as the original WC 1/2 ton shafts. For the front I switched out the differential side gears from the WC third member to the PH third member so as to use the 1/2 ton WC front axle shafts in the PH third member. The same postwar third members were also used in the 3/4 ton PG 4 wheel drive series trucks with V-8's.
