Heat in an electrical item usually indicates a high amperage draw. Perhaps something is grounding on the case and drawing a lot of amps or the armature is grounded. You can buy a hand held amp probe fairly cheap. It clamps loosely around a wire and will tell you the amps drawn by that device.
