Starter Woes

Rebuilt the starter for the TW. Bench tested it. Bendix works fine. Motor spins strong. The silver lead from the solenoid to the insulated brushes (in the left of photo) gets screaming hot! So hot after just a few seconds running, I burned myself touching it. I'm sure it would melt the rubber grommet where it enters the end housing.

Any ideas what's up with it???
