The replies and opinions expressed below are the same that are always voiced on truck forums when this subject is raised. The article I linked contains the perspective of the service industry, and their lawyers. A few of the times that I've stirred this pot with that article I've had shop forman speak up in support of its position.

I have manufacturer, vendor, and SAE wheel literature filling many 3" binders covering the 90 or more years that the Budd type stud piloted ball seat system has existed. All references that contain torque charts cite 450-500 lb/ft of DRY torque for 3/4" x 16 tpi studs and nuts. This is for stud piloted only, hub piloted is different. The manufacturers and their design engineers say that is the standard. There is no question that dry torque at that level creates a p.i.t.a. when combined with years of inertia on a set of nuts.
