Tom,
What a great shop! Is that your brothers?
Autocar is forging along. Let's just say that some orange paint has been sprayed! :) I'd post a pic or two but I can't do it from my phone I don't think? Don't know how anyway. I have my gauges in getting restored but they're telling me June at the earliest so I guess this Summer she won't likely be ready for the road but it should look good anyway.
Have you ever cut a diesel tank apart? This truck had a cool old saddle tank that straddles the frame. The top of the tank is checker plate & I guess they stored chains or tired or whatever on top because they're dented. So I want to grind the welds off that hold the checker plate. Ugly job but not hard. So the tank had old diesel up until a month ago. So I drained it & ive filled it to the top with water & just let it run for hours.
I have friends that tell me to hook up an exhaust pipe from a gas car & just let it run until the tank is warm to the touch...then start grinding a hole in the top of the tank...the idea being there can be no explosion if the tank is full of co2 & no oxygen.
This is nice in theory but I'm still a little gun shy knowing if she ignited...bye bye :)
I know diesel isn't that volatile but there have been big ass explosions from welding on barges where diesel tanks were still flammable.
Am I being over nervous? :)
I'm thinking of just filling it to the top with water & start grinding.
