It depends on what you are calling reconditioning and what caused the problem to start with. Batteries lead plates get ate away in time and if they are basically gone there not worth fixing. You can "drop a cell" which means either a plates connector has broke/corroded off or shorted via plates touching. It was told to me that a marine battery has more cranking power because the plates are closer but shouldn't be used in auto situations as they could touch and short. That seemed weird to me as some boats get knocked around pretty hard with waves.

When I was a kid and money was tight, Dad would take the tops off of batteries and fix them. One had a dropped cell with the bar detached. Drained the acid and washed with water repeatedly and then solder the bar back. Out the top back on and refilled with acid and used it for tears.

Remember though batteries give off hydrogen gas especially when you are charging. That's why you should NEVER grind or weld with one around. I personally had to drag a former co worker who was welding on a farm truck with the bed hoist up with the battery box on the frame rail. He was standing on then rails welding under the bed and charging the batteries with the metal cover off. battery exploded and splashed acid under his welding mask into his eyes. Worst pain I have EVER seen a human in. After he fell to the ground I drug him to a standing water hydrant and turned it on full blast in his eyes. Luckily his sight was not taken away. Be aware of this as well if you are hooking up jumper cables on batteries too, especially if you are charging them.
