Depends on what you call running dry and shutting it off when it makes noise like air is getting into the system. Never run a pump dry that is a no no big time! The little fluid left will be diluted with new and not make a difference. If you can drain the reservoir like on a tractor transmission with a pump inside it there will only be a few ounce's inside the pistons of the pump. Don't use the pump to push out the fluid in the system, drain it and use air pressure if you need to blow out lines of old fluid. It depends on what style of pump, the way it is designed ect. A pto pump you could turn it by hand to get it all out. What are you flushing?
