Thank you all for the input. Just to be clear, there is a tiny film of product on the lugs, no great globs. I tighten the lug nuts by hand, and use enough force to make them do that last "pop" before they can't go any further, considering the size of the star wrench, my height, weight and age.

I have broken too many lugs on other people's vehicles, when asked to help on the side of the road in a rain storm...you know the drill. When I went to loosen them this time, they were still tight from 15 years ago. Not rusted together, just tight.
