You get hydrogen bubbles near one plate, ozone near the other, making the perfect mix of gasses waiting to turn back into H2O, with a release of energy.
Though modern "maintenance free" batteries do not do as much electrolysis as older ones, due to a different alloy in the lead- antimony instead of tin? Or calcium?
Notice that even the plastic marine battery boxes have gaps around the cables. Water resistant, NOT air tight.
