Just a thought but the starter was broke into the old ring and fit good with the wear. Now not in a matched starter and ring with different wear patterns may cause more noise till it meshes a while with the new ring if both had wear patterns from different starters. Hard to describe noise in words and what may be normal to one is not normal to others in the way it sounds or said.
