Pull the dust cover and check the ring
Gear for recent wear marks.
Also make sure to pull the coil wire and have someone crank the engine over while you look with a flashlight or listen for rubbing.
If you look up at the starter drive from the bottom you can see a lot.
I'm going to speculate the starter drive is not engaging the flywheel correctly or engaging to far.
