i respectfully admire anyone doing their own tire work. I truly admire those that have learned from others that old rims and tires are not something to mess with with. I assisted (mostly watched) bob stahl break down my combat rims. truth,, we (he) quit after two. we took the remaining 3 to a heavy duty tire shop. they broke them down, and we sandblasted and then inspected and painted only the ones worth saving. we needed to source 2 additional rims to make a set. we scrapped 2. combats are safer than split rings, but we assembled and inflated from a distance to be safe. I'm in the heavy trucking biz. i'm not afraid of much. we have heavy tire guys that will sandblast and powdercoat rims for $65 a rim. our rims are bigger than our powerwagons. they reject ones with bad rims or rings and we move on. they return powdercoated rims with new or recap tires. we bolt on and go. Please consider what is safe, prudent and economical. i'd go without lunch for a month to pay someone professional to do tire work for me on my old iron. the guys we use have cages, trained guys and insurance. i'd hate to see one of our pw guys get hurt. BTW, you can get rims black powdercoated and i'm sure you can get them to do the rings in silver. stay safe.
