On the Tucker, both front and rear axles are 8-3/4 mopar rears, mounted rigidly to platforms that pivot like a 5th wheel. The arrangement is called "wagon steer". The platforms are connected by a pair of tie rods to a crank shaft (for lack of a better term) that's actuated by a hydraulic cylinder. The linkage is such that when the cylinder moves it turns the rear platform in the opposite direction of the front platform, giving a tighter turning radius than if only one platform turned. The tie rods run parallel to the long axis of the vehicle, so they aren't in front or behind the axle exactly. In one turning direction they're under tension (left in the front)and in the other direction they're under compression. So yes, they can buckle if they get much out of being perfectly straight. I will get to test this early, because the first turn is sharply to the right, which puts the front tie rod (the one I bent and straightened) under compression.
