Diametral pitch is the number of teeth per inch of pitch diameter. Pitch diameter is the diameter of where the teeth of the two gears meet. Usually about half way up the teeth. Frintance, a one inch gear pitch diameter (1 3/8" OD) and 12 teeth, is DP 12. So DP12/12 would describe that frinstance gear. Add an 'S' somewhere for steel, DP12/12S.
Spur gears have the straight teeth, as opposed to helical cut teeth.
