The pioneer tool rack was issued I think early to mid 1942, so all the earlier Carryalls- most of the half tons - would just get a field fit, wherever their operators thought it should go.

From memory, the earliest 3/4 ton Command and Carryall came with plain tailgates and got a rack field fitted. Later 3/4 ton Command and Carryall, after, say, mid'42, had holes drilled and captive nuts fitted in the tailgate so it would bolt right on.

One of the key differences was the USA number painting. It was factory painted right where the rack went on both those vehicle types, so if you scrape your tailgate and it has an original USA number under the rack it is a field fit rack. If the original USA number is above the rack, it could well be factory fit.
