I have a lot of old jerry cans, and I agree they look good on the truck, but I don't think I have a single one that is relatively clean inside or doesn't seep a little bit of gas out through a seam somewhere. They were great in their day, but that was a long time ago and they're not surviving well any more.

On the plastic cans, I buy the kind with a simple spout whenever I see one at a yard sale, and then if it doesn't have a vent, I put one in. You can buy a pack of plastic vents very cheap on ebay. I'm noticing now that a lot of "tractor supply" type stores have functional spouts you can buy that come with a vent. They aren't particularly cheap but they will turn a modern California-approved gas can into something you can actually pour gas out of. I suppose the feds will ban them eventually but for now, they're on the shelves. The legalese on the package says that they're only for use on gas cans made before a certain date. The people who sell them mail-order say that they may be banned for use on gas cans in some states, but the "water can spouts" (same shape, same plastic, different color) are legal in all states.
