I put a later trans in a wdx several years ago. The pto will not interchange. And I had to change to a later starter.
The "crash box" isn't that bad when you get acquainted with it. Abd the foot activated starter, along with the square gears, is a good theft deterrent. 98% of people won't have the slightest idea how to start it or get into the next gear. :)
