Many years back I had a 390 Ford engine rebuilt by a reputable shop. A new guy (?) failed to clean some of the shavings from the block. These destroyed the main bearings and the engine failed fast. Cleanliness is extremely important on engines, especially before assembling them and sending them out the door. I hope your rebuilder didn't do something like that, given they are now "defunct".
