Are you talking like a lawnmower valve spring compressor like what Briggs and Stratton sells? That won't work too well, better off getting a decent clamp type. I was lucky enough to find an older compressor from an old engine builder. It is well worn, but still works great.
Looks like the one here on ebay in design, but different. Try to avoid the cheepies that don't look like they will hold up or look like they will bend under load.
You will need to pull the head.
