I believe the DMV took pre orders for retro plates for various years of older plates and the black and yellow was the only one with enough interest. They don't look right to me because of the current number letter sequence and it looks weird see new cars with a retro plate. I have 56 plates with a 62 sticker on them for my 1956 Chevy and the DMV did not squawk. I would not do it again though as Vaughn said. I did pick up a pair of decent 1947 auto plates and I have the 1948 tabs. The are not refurbished to new but I think they will pass as is.
