The new ones are made out of aluminum. If you try to pass them off as originals you may be told they can't because they are repos. Don't ask me how I know? You can try I guess but there are ways as mentioned above to get around it and still get them their money. I carry the vanity plates in the truck.
Bottom line is if you aren't doing something stupid, they most likely will not bother you. I have been confronted 5 times by police now but all they want to do is look, ask questions and smile. ;)
