External Ballast Resistor on LA318

Is a ballast resistor really necessary? I understand the thinking behind running 12v to the coil during startup, but does it *really* make a difference? Can't I just use a coil with an internal ballast? I would think modern coils would have all this figured out. BTW, I'm currently running a standard point-type ignition, but may upgrade to a Pertronix type at some point.
