Been around 5 here at night and 15 in the day the last few days. Not unusual for this time of year, but still makes for a big gas bill and a lot of paying attention to pipes and vehicles. The weather computers think we'll get a colder blast next week.

Thinking of your cows, have you read about the winter of 1861-62? Almost all the cattle in the Columbia basin died, not only because of the cold, but because of a hard icy crust of snow that meant they couldn't paw through it to get any grass. The Columbia river froze over at the Dalles, it was 30 below in Yakima, and the Indians on the plains suffered mightily including losing most of their horses. A story out of the mining camp of Florence has it that a couple of young men, getting cabin fever being stuck inside all winter (extensions on the stove pipes to stick up above the snow) decided to go for a hike and see the country. They got back after a week or so and asked somebody in town with a thermometer how cold it had been. He told them he couldn't exactly say because the mercury had been frozen the whole time they were gone.
