I have used Sun 0-5000 rpm units on a lot of cars and Power Wagons. You can still find them used and they are beautiful instruments....and you can still find the 6 volt sending units. Check the web.

As for max rpm, I don't know. But I did used to drag race a 1950 Plymouth, these had the 217 version of the small block flathead with a slightly shorter stroke than the 230. I ran this to 5000 rpm and shifted full throttle....it never broke. I think think the long block engines may be a little sturdier but I never abused them like I did the 217. I used to beat the Corvairs and Falcons which really pissed them off. ( I did cheat slightly, the head was milled 0.060)
