they are designed to run at about 3200 rpms at about 55. higher than that for extended periods and the film of oil on the bearings starts to get too thin. the crankshaft is forged but is very heavy. lots of mass swinging around. I wind all mine up like that since the 80s until my last regularly driven 230 flathead about 8 years ago. never had any problems even on worn out engines. the fan noise is what freaks some people out I think. the early engines with the 6 blade fan have a small pulley which results in really high fan speed (for offroad conditions this is good) and sound like a B17 at 55. but its ok. everyone gets out of your way.
