Personally I would stay away from the heat. You're not doing a restoration so put it where it is easy to access. I put mine in the box that is in my bed.
If you do decide to mount next to the heat, Making a box with a false wall that has an air gap between will kill the heat for you. A double with the ends open allowing air to pass through would be even better. Same principle of multipane windows.
