The new diesels are WAY cleaner than those before 2007. Even those cheating VWs are orders of magnitude cleaner than my 06 Jetta. Performance comes at a cost and it is a nuisance, but the technology is working and it is saving people's lives. It's hard to fathom how those nearly invisible tailpipe emissions can put people in the hospital or shorten their lives, but they do. That is why we can't ignore emissions.

My bet is that Cummins will be fine. In the wake of those cheating Germans, the lawyers smell blood in the water, so they're going after settlements left and right. That doesn't mean everyone is guilty.

I think we'll continue to invent cleaner, more reliable diesels, and more efficient diesels. We're probably not going back to the simpler machines that we enjoy working on. They will get more sophisticated.

A worse outcome would be if we stop investing in diesel technology and follow the lead of cities like Paris, Madrid, Athens, and Mexico City that propose to ban diesel completely because of emissions.
