As the load goes up the voltage meter will start to drop. Then the alternator will try to increase the voltage and cover the higher amp load being used. If the load gets to high the alternator can't keep up and will start to show a discharge and the voltage will also drop off down to the point something has to give and then you hope you have a fuse in the system to break the circuit and stop the process from destroying stuff.
