People get shorts and over loads mixed up all the time. A short circuit blows fuses fast it is when the wires are shorted(connected together)out to ground like cut into, smashed, melted to ground ect. Now a over load is when you put to much of a load on a circuit amp wise and the wires heat up some even melt at times but if no fuse in the circuit they will cause a voltage drop to the point lights dim, signals won't flash right, starter can't turn over fast, battery charge rate drops off etc. If you have too small a wire for the load it will get hot on you. If the load is to much for the fuse it will blow. Put a bigger fuse in but not upgrade the wire size you can start fires under the dash with the insulation melting off the wire. Wires can turn red hot just like in a electric heater. If your draining the battery down and the alternator is trying to keep up but the load is more than the alternator can put out it will cause the battery to discharge and all the load will be on the alternator. Turn off the engine and you will not be able to start it off the battery now. The battery is really only used to start engines and cover short term high amp loads then the generator brings it back up as you drive. If you don't let it recharge completely it can keep cycling till the battery is discharged to much to start the engine anymore. If the wire is too small for the alternator out put it will over heat under high loads charging the battery just like a loose connection can cause it to get hot increase the resistance and make the problem worse. So tell us what is happening and it is easier to tell you what may be wrong.
