Find them first and scrape the grooves out. Paint it white. On mine I put two extra marks on about 1/2 inch away from the TDC line on both sides. This way when using the timing light to time with I can see it real good and when those extra marks are even on both sides when flashing I know I am close. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be. I tend to fine tune the timing by ear after that. I drive it and set it to the best performance with out knocking out on the road warmed up. Then I check it again with the light and most of the time it is right on.
